    Fedora 43 sancisce la fine di X11 su GNOME: Wayland prende il comando

    Attendevamo la decisione sulla rimozione del supporto a X11 da GNOME, come annunciato in questo articolo, e ora è arrivata!

    Il Fedora Engineering Steering Committee (FESCo) ha ufficialmente deciso: Fedora 43 abbandonerà la sessione GNOME X11 in favore di Wayland. La decisione, approvata con una netta maggioranza (5 voti a favore, 2 contrari), segna un cambio di rotta significativo per la distribuzione.

    Secondo Neal Gompa, promotore della proposta, la sessione GNOME X11 ha ricevuto pochissima attenzione in termini di test e sviluppo, causando l’accumulo di numerosi bug irrisolti. In particolare, Mutter, il gestore delle finestre di GNOME, ha continuato a soffrire di problemi che compromettevano l’esperienza utente.

    Del resto, il terreno era già stato preparato. Gli sviluppatori GNOME hanno introdotto, a partire dalla versione 48, una opzione di compilazione chiamata “ENABLE_X11_SUPPORT” (abilita supporto X11), che consente di escludere il supporto a X11 già in fase di compilazione del software. La roadmap ufficiale prevede la disattivazione definitiva di X11 in GNOME 49 e la rimozione completa in GNOME 50. Fedora anticipa questa transizione di una versione, evitando di dover mantenere correzioni specifiche per X11 che ormai nessuno ha più interesse o risorse per gestire.

    Nonostante la decisione, il cambiamento non è stato accolto all’unanimità. Alcuni membri della comunità sostengono che, pur rimanendo un’opzione di nicchia, GNOME X11 serva ancora efficacemente una parte di utenti, mettendo in dubbio la necessità di eliminarlo del tutto.

    Fedora, tuttavia, è convinta che l’allineamento dello sviluppo di GNOME su una unica via, migliorerà la qualità complessiva e il supporto del sistema. Per chi necessita di X11, restano altre alternative come l’ambiente desktop Cinnamon o MATE, che Fedora continuerà a supportare tramite gestori di accesso come LightDM.
