    Mozilla interrompe lo sviluppo di DeepSpeech

    Mozilla interrompe lo sviluppo di DeepSpeech

    Mozilla ha annunciato ufficialmente la fine dello sviluppo di DeepSpeech, un motore open source per il riconoscimento vocale offline. Il progetto si basava su tecniche di apprendimento automatico (machine learning) ispirate al modello Deep Speech sviluppato da Baidu, ed era pensato per offrire una soluzione libera e accessibile per trascrivere la voce in testo, anche senza connessione a Internet.

    Sebbene l’annuncio possa sorprendere, la decisione di interrompere DeepSpeech non arriva del tutto inaspettata: l’ultimo aggiornamento del codice su GitHub risale al 2021 e il progetto non ha mai raggiunto una versione 1.0 stabile, rimanendo fermo alla release 0.9.3. Questo lungo periodo di inattività e l’assenza di un rilascio ufficiale completo indicavano già da tempo un progressivo abbandono dello sviluppo attivo.

    DeepSpeech ha rappresentato per anni un punto di riferimento per chi cercava un’alternativa open source ai servizi vocali proprietari, ed è stato utilizzato in numerosi progetti.

    In effetti, dopo l’interruzione dello sviluppo di DeepSpeech da parte di Mozilla, una parte del team originale ha fondato Coqui AI, dando vita a un fork (cioè ripreso e sviluppato da altri sviluppatori) chiamato Coqui STT. Questo progetto ha inizialmente proseguito lo sviluppo del motore di riconoscimento vocale, mantenendo compatibilità con i modelli DeepSpeech e introducendo miglioramenti propri.

    Tuttavia, anche Coqui STT sembra oggi non più attivamente mantenuto. Sul repository software ufficiale non si registrano aggiornamenti recenti, e la stessa Coqui ha dichiarato di aver spostato il focus su altri progetti, come Coqui TTS (per la sintesi vocale) e Coqui Studio, lasciando intendere che il ramo STT è stato messo da parte.

    In sostanza:

    • DeepSpeech è stato abbandonato da Mozilla dopo i licenziamenti del 2020.
    • Coqui STT è nato come fork, ma anche questo ha perso slancio e non riceve più aggiornamenti attivi.
    • L’attenzione della comunità si è spostata su alternative più moderne, come Whisper di OpenAI.

    Mozilla ha interrotto il cammino, ma come spesso accade nel mondo open source, un’alternativa trova sempre la sua strada.
